Scottish Smallpipe player Brìghde Chaimbeul and light artist Nick Verstand present the world premiere of a new audiovisual performance in Basel. Raised on the Isle of Skye, Chaimbeul has emerged as one of the most distinctive voices of a new generation of Scottish folk music, performing on major stages around the world. A native Gaelic speaker, she is deeply rooted in the musical and linguistic culture of her homeland. On the Scottish smallpipes, she brings together characteristic drones and traditional melodies with contemporary soundscapes and electronic elements.
Her music raises a central question of the festival: How can language, musical traditions and cultural forms remain alive without simply being preserved? Chaimbeul shows how a tradition passed down through generations can evolve and take on new forms in the present. Language and cultural heritage emerge not as something fixed, but as living forms of communication that endure precisely because they continue to change.
Nick Verstand, already known to Basel audiences through «Exoplanets» at Messe Basel in 2026, complements the performance with a specially developed light installation, creating a visual counterpart to Chaimbeul’s distinctive sound world.
Here you can listen to the music of Brìghde Chaimbeul; here you can gain insight into the work of Nick Verstand.
