In the early 1980s, Heinz Bütler directed an award-winning documentary about five of the most important representatives of the early so-called Gugging generation: Johann Hauser, Ernst Herbeck, Edmund Mach, Oswald Tschirtner, and August Walla. The film offers intimate insights into the lives, thoughts, and feelings of these extraordinary individuals, who today are among the world's most important icons of Art Brut.
Her drawings, photographs, and texts speak a language that could be considered a secret language, certainly a different language than ours. And a language that, according to long-prevailing understanding, was "not normal," which is why its articulation was banished to the "State Asylum" in Gugging near Vienna, built in 1896.
