The internationally renowned literary and cultural scholar Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht explores the relationship between spoken and written language. What changes when the fleeting spoken word, bound to a particular moment, is captured in writing – and can therefore be preserved, repeated and read beyond its original context? His lecture examines the different forms of communication that emerge through speech and writing, and how the transition from one to the other transforms meaning, perception and understanding.
