Prof. Dr. Caroline Rowland: From Babble to Beethoven

Monday, March 1, 2027, 6:00 PM

As a prelude to Fritz Hauser’s concert Aus dem Nichts at the Voltahalle, Prof. Dr. Caroline Rowland, Director of the Department of Language Acquisition at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, will give a lecture at the Novartis Pavilion. The renowned researcher will offer insights into the latest research on how children acquire language and how language emerges from the earliest forms of perception and interaction.

Long before children begin to speak, they encounter sounds, rhythms, repetitions, gestures and responses from those around them. From these elementary forms of communication, language gradually begins to take shape. This process resonates with Fritz Hauser’s Aus dem Nichts: in both, complex structures emerge from the simplest of beginnings, raising the question of how meaning, connection and communication can grow out of seemingly elementary signals.
