Apparatuses for autonomous sonic behavior

A new exhibition by Johannes Kreidler will be presented at the Voltahalle. The renowned experimental artist describes the exhibition as follows:

«Thunder sheets rumble from an inner impulse. A drum with 32 motorized beaters has its own specific rhythms — rhythms specific to its species. A station clock runs with hands that invent a new time. Sculptural keyboards play themselves. A ruminating machine thinks aloud to itself, audibly and unceasingly.

In Xenoetika, robotic sound-producing devices come together, each with its own rhythms, movements, and sensitivities. They form a counterpart that displays autonomous modes of behavior in the form of choreographies and musical compositions.

The title combines the foreign or strange (xeno), thought (noetics), and the question of how to rightly engage with it (ethics) — in the plural, because each machine poses its own question, or, as a work of art, is itself an answer.»
